WELCOME TO THE 12th INTERNATIONAL EARTH SCIENCE OLYMPIAD (12th IESO)
On behalf of the Promotion of Academic Olympiad and Development of Science Education Foundation (POSN), I would like to extend a warm welcome to all delegates to the 12th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO). The venue will be at Mahidol University, Kanchanburi Campus, Thailand. The theme of this year’s competition, “Earth Science for All”, is most appropriate and timely, because it reflects our unified effort to promote, among citizens of this Planet Earth, greater awareness of the global challenges all of us are facing. These challenges include sea-level rise resulting from climate change, the increase in air pollutions, the diminution of fossil fuels, and the depletion of other natural resources. These problems can only be solved through collaborative efforts of all nations and citizens of our planet.
It is our intention that this IESO event serves as a tribute to the late His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who was the first recipient of both the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS): Humanitarian Soil Scientist Award and the United Nations’ Global Development Network (UNDP): Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award. His Majesty’s thorough understanding of soil and water resources management, environmental and natural resources conservation has resulted in thousands of Royal development projects that now benefit every citizen of Thailand and of many other countries. We will always hold these achievements in highest esteem and particularly in remembrance of His Majesty’s benevolence and kindness.
We wish that each delegate will take advantage of his or her participation in this IESO to learn as much as possible from one another and therefore contribute to the same cause of solving global Earth Science problems. This event will provide an excellent setting for all to get together to share experiences while making long lasting friendship. We expect that you will have memorable experiences throughout the duration of the event.
I look forward to welcoming you in Thailand in August 2018
It is an honor to welcome all participants to the 12th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO), which is the first time organized by Thailand. The 12th IESO event will take place during August 8-17, 2018, at Mahidol University Kanchanaburi Campus. The province of Kanchanaburi is one of the top tourist destinations in Thailand with rich history and culture e.g. pre-historic human settlements, Khmer archaeological park, the Death Railway building during World War II.
Situated in Permian-Triassic karst landscape, our Kanchanaburi campus provides the best environment to study Earth science. Therefore, selecting our campus as the venue for this event is the most logical decision by the organizing committee. Undoubtedly, IESO, the most competitive global academic competition challenging young secondary-school students from all over the world, will succeed in inspiring these excellent country representatives to become valuable Earth scientists to solve several critical Earth Science research problems in the future. The participation of nation delegates including students, mentors and observers will create a strong Earth Science network with the purpose of raising awareness of Earth Science problems in a global stage. On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee of the 12th IESO, I assure that all participants will have memorable experiences regarding the competition and other activities of this event.
I am looking forward to welcoming you in August 2018.
It is a great pleasure to welcome student participants, mentors and observers from all over the world to the 12th IESO during August 8-17, 2018, at Mahidol University Kanchanaburi Campus. As the chairperson of the Scientific Committee, I oversee the exam preparation process carefully to make sure that the academic competition proceeds in accordance with the guidelines stated in the Statues of the IESO, version 4, published November 1, 2016.
With numerous critical Earth Science problems we are facing currently and in the near future such as natural and anthropogenic climate changes, it is necessary that people from all walks of life become aware of the urgency of seeking for solutions of these problems. This is the task that requires unwavering global collaboration. IESO event provides an opportunity for all of us to gather, test our knowledge and share our experiences that will lead to solving these problems in the future. Many of student participants will become our future colleagues of Earth scientists and will make great contributions to our scientific community. Mentors who conduct research Earth and Planetary Sciences from respective countries will mingle, communicate, and passionately discuss sciences during this ten-day period which will lead to progresses in science in order to achieve our 12th IESO theme, “Earth Science for All”
I look forward to welcoming and meeting you in August 2018.
